In 1909 two committees were appointed to develop a means by which congregations could contribute to a common funding system, benefiting the whole church. In 1941, after 32 years of conversation, Unified Promotion began. Unified Promotion was a covenantal agreement in which congregations agreed to contribute ten (10%) of their local operating receipts to the common mission fund of the church. In exchange, the General church would reduce the Special Offerings from fifteen (15) to six (6) and each ministry would no longer contact congregations directly for operating gifts.
Later, Unified Promotion was renamed Basic Mission Finance and now Disciples Mission Fund. In the change to Disciples Mission Fund, Special Offerings were designated for specific ministries rather than being added to the overall funding system. Disciples Mission Fund is supported by congregations, individuals, the Christian Church Foundation, Disciples Women's ministries, Sunday school classes and youth groups from around the United States and Canada. The four Special Offerings benefit designated ministries of the church. The Easter Offering supports the work of General Ministries. Pentecost is shared with regions and the general church providing direct support of new congregations. Thanksgiving is shared in partnership with our institutions of higher education, seminaries, and divinity houses. The Christmas offering supports the work of regions with 100% of the Christmas offering remaining in the region where it is contributed. In addition the church has two Special Mission Funds: Week of Compassion and Reconciliation.
